This week’s project was to construct a small plant nursery so that we can start our next batch of Yasi seedlings. One of Arthur’s cousins provided us with approximately 1000 Yasi seeds. Yasi seeds don’t have a long shelf life so it’s important to plant them soon after they’ve been gathered to ensure the best germination rate. The first thing we had to do is bury them in the ground for 10 days to decompose the fruit surrounding the seed. That gave us just over a week to get our nursery ready.
We built the nursery with bamboo, which we acquired from a huge stand just a little down the main road. Bamboo is a very strong building material that was used in traditional Fijian buildings but has fallen out of favour in recent years due to the ease of access to milled lumber and corrugated tin. Thomas recently sent us a link to a very inspiring TED talk showcasing some amazing buildings made entirely of bamboo in Indonesia which hopefully I can share through this link – Magical Houses made of Bamboo
Here’s the progress on our Nursery.
We’re heading up to Savusavu for a few days to visit friends but when we get back we will start germinating the Yasi seeds and I’m hoping to start up some vegetable plants as well. I’m craving lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers!
