Garden, Chickens and Sea Can!

greenhouse made with parts from the destroyed tent

We have been very busy during the past two weeks trying to get a lot done before I head back to Canada. Arthur will need a well-deserved rest once I leave this Saturday. I’ve tried to upload a few videos showing our progress on a number of projects on Vimeo as well as YouTube but our internet connection is not good enough to support video uploads. Once I’m back in Canada and can connect to an ADSL service rather than relying on a 3G connection I’ll try again.

On the gardening front, we’ve managed to plant all the seedlings I had started and they’re all looking good. We also discovered a store in Suva called Hop Tie, which sells all sorts of seeds so we’ve stocked up on lots of different seeds including a variety of herbs, spinach and even broccoli. I can’t wait to try planting them when I get back.

Our chickens are now 3 weeks old and are growing quickly. Arthur has built a great chicken shelter with a secure night shelter and a sizeable chicken run. Once the chicks are 3 to 4 months old we’ll have to move them into a larger chicken coop and yard. By then we’ll be ready for another batch of chicks.

Our container has finally arrived on our property. Since October the container has been resting in Nabouwalu. We had a very difficult time trying to find a shipping company that would transport our container the last 30 kms. We needed to find someone with a side lift truck who was already here on our island on another job who could take on our job as a side job. It was just too expensive to bring a side lift truck over to our island for our job alone. Our container finally arrived the day before I had to leave for Suva so we did not have time to open it. Arthur will have the honours once he’s back home.

Today I will be on my way back to Canada for 6 weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing friends and family but will miss life here.

Glad to have stumbled onto your blog. Living off the grid in Idaho, USA. My wife and I just finished our road, but the projects never seem to end.

When visiting Hawaii, my wife and I wondered if living in a more tropical climate would have been better, especially concerning solar power. I look forward to reading more and discovering if I need to rethink locations.
