I have to get a block completed for this Saturday’s Colour Harmony Sampler Class which I’m attempting to work on while answering the door for trick or treaters. Lots of fun! I’m in my fifth year teaching this class and while I have completed blocks for all the classes, last year’s class challenged me to re-work my blocks to be a bit more innovative and adventurous. Students are great for pushing boundaries. At the start of each year I ask my students to choose one colour that they want to work with all year and then to choose a block design that they will also use all year. My colour is Red and my block design is ‘Broken Windows’. Last’s month’s colour harmony was Monochromatic.
My first attempt was okay but lacked depth. The values blended together.
Second attempt is more interesting with greater range of value.
This is stretching my boundaries – using white and black to create value, and getting rid if the background. Red is a very difficult hue to lighten and still stay true to Red but using red and white prints with varying degrees of white works well.
This month’s colour harmony is Analogous. Here’s my fabric palette. Stay tuned to see what will happen.
